ensembles
While ensembles seem easier, for me, they are always more difficult to execute well.
Just as important as solos, ensembles are the real test of well trained dancers. A good dancer can balance their own artistry while matching the rhythm of other dancers. As dancers, we are always taught the importance of ensembles and working together because of its significance in the professional world. All aspiring dancers start at the bottom of the food chain, one out of one hundred dancers in the corps, where you are required to dance in synchronization while never sacrificing the emotion or story. Only from there can you work your way up the food chain to have a chance at shining onstage on your own.

mongolian bowl dance
For a teacher exchange program, we had the privilege of being taught by 2 graduates from the Beijing Academy of Dance. In this grueling dance, we quite literally had glass bowls (taped together) and balanced them on our heads all summer, only to have headpieces that basically attached the bowls to our head.

Through the same teacher exchange program, I was able to perform this duet with my best friend at the time. This duet is traditional Dai dance with a modern twist.

The group of girls performing this piece was formed out of extraordinary circumstances during quarantine. We all came back to the studio, bags packed with sanitizer, social distanced, cladded in masks, and learned how to move together again in the most natural, fulfilling way.

This piece challenged us all because it was so abstract. We learned that part of being a dancer is being able to convey a vision or message a choreographer has to the best of our ability.

This piece was cheesy in the most necessary way. I was going through a hard time in highschool, and it was just the right thing to help me out of it. The story follows a group of orphans just trying to create something of their own. (or at least that's what I think it's about ;)
Through this piece, I learned to let go of how I was perceived. I learned that I would only look embarrassing or stupid if I thought so. That revelation brought me to a whole new world of possibility within dance, where true expression is possible and untethered by judgement.
